Total compensation for US tech leaders ranges from about $150K for Engineering Managers to $500K or more for CTOs and Chief AI Officers. Median base salaries sit around $220K for Engineering Managers, $250K for Directors of Engineering, $300K for VPs of Engineering, and $350K for CTOs. Equity and bonuses can push total comp well above those figures, especially at public companies.

The Chief AI Officer (CAIO) currently commands the highest median salary at $380K, edging out the CTO at $350K. Both roles can exceed $500K in total compensation at large companies. The CAIO premium reflects the intense demand for senior AI leadership in 2026.

Company stage is one of the biggest pay drivers. Early-stage startups tend to offer lower base salaries but larger equity grants, while public companies pay the highest base and cash bonus. A CTO at a Series A startup might earn $200K-$280K in base salary compared to $400K-$500K+ at a public company. Growth-stage companies typically fall somewhere in between.

At the median, Staff Engineers earn about $275K and Engineering Managers earn about $220K.
