Why Executive Tech Job Boards Are Different

Volume is the enemy at the executive level. A VP Engineering or CTO looking at general job boards faces a signal-to-noise problem that mid-career engineers never encounter — thousands of listings, almost none relevant. The platforms that work for executive tech hiring share three traits: they filter aggressively for seniority, they enforce a compensation threshold (explicitly or implicitly), and they provide access to networks rather than just listings.

Experteer and ExecThread understand this. Both gate access — Experteer through headhunter relationships and salary floors, ExecThread through a membership model where executives share roles from their own professional networks. The result is a curated feed where every listing is plausibly relevant to someone at the VP+ level.

General boards like LinkedIn and Indeed can work at this level, but only with disciplined filtering. LinkedIn’s value isn’t the job listings — it’s the recruiter inbound that comes from a well-maintained profile and open-to-work signal. Indeed’s value is breadth when you need to cast a wide net, particularly for director-level roles at non-tech companies that don’t recruit through specialist channels.

By Role

VP Engineering

For VP Engineering roles, LinkedIn Premium and Experteer are the strongest passive channels — maintain a visible profile and let recruiters come to you. HN Who is Hiring surfaces active postings from technical companies that value engineering leadership. For the majority of VP Eng roles, however, retained executive search remains the primary channel.

CTO

See our dedicated CTO job boards guide. Most CTOs are hired through networks — board postings for CTO roles are the exception, not the rule.

Chief AI Officer (CAIO)

The CAIO market is extremely thin. ai-jobs.net surfaces the rare postings that do appear publicly, but the vast majority of CAIO placements happen through retained search exclusively. For more on the role itself, see our Chief AI Officer guide and AI jobs overview.

For Boards & Hiring Committees

Hiring Goal Best Channel Approx. Cost
VP Engineering search LinkedIn Recruiter + retained firm $10K+/yr seat + 25–33% fee
CTO placement Retained search exclusively 30–33% first-year comp
CAIO placement Retained search with AI practice 30–33% + equity advisory

Executive Tech Job Boards FAQ

What is the best job board for executive tech roles?
Experteer is the strongest dedicated executive tech platform, particularly in Europe. In the US, ExecThread and The Ladders serve the six-figure market. However, 70% of VP+ tech roles are filled through retained search firms, not job boards — see our executive search directory.
Is Experteer worth the subscription?
For European-based tech executives, yes. Experteer’s value is access to headhunter networks that don’t post elsewhere. The basic tier ($9/mo) is sufficient; premium ($49/mo) adds priority visibility. For US-only searches, LinkedIn Premium is more cost-effective. See our full Experteer review.
Where do CTOs find their next role?
Most CTOs are hired through professional networks and retained executive search, not job boards. The exceptions: LinkedIn (unavoidable for passive discovery), HN Who is Hiring (strong for technical co-founder/CTO roles at startups), and Experteer (European market). See our dedicated CTO job boards guide.
What salary should I expect for a VP Engineering role?
Median US total compensation for VP Engineering is approximately $280,000 in 2026, with ranges from $220K at startups to $500K+ at large tech companies. European equivalents typically run 40–60% of US figures. See our VP Engineering salary guide.
Should I use a headhunter or a job board?
At the VP+ level, retained search firms consistently outperform job boards for both candidate quality and role access. Boards are useful for visibility and inbound interest, but the highest-value executive roles are rarely posted publicly. Many executives maintain both — passive LinkedIn/Experteer presence plus 2–3 retained search relationships.
